How to Prepare Your Boat for Storage
A little prep before you park keeps your boat ready for the next trip instead of turning spring into a repair project.
- Wash and dry the hull, deck, and trailer completely, and rinse salt or lake residue off the running gear
- Flush the engine and drain all water from the block, pumps, and lines to prevent freeze damage
- Fill the fuel tank and add stabilizer to limit condensation and fuel breakdown
- Change the oil and lower-unit gear lube before the boat sits
- Remove electronics, life jackets, cushions, and anything that holds moisture
- Pull the drain plug and leave it out so water can escape
- Disconnect the battery, or connect it to a maintainer, and store it somewhere dry
- Open lockers and lift seat cushions so air can move and mildew doesn't set in
- Add a moisture absorber inside the cabin or under the cover
- Check tire pressure on the trailer, grease the wheel bearings, and inspect the coupler and safety chains
